Yes, having both AL amyloidosis and multiple myeloma together is fairly common. In fact, AL amyloidosis occurs in about 12 to 15 percent of people who have multiple myeloma. This happens because both conditions are related to plasma cell disorders. Common symptoms that people with both conditions may experience include shortness of breath, diarrhea, feeling full quickly after eating, unexplained weight loss, swelling in the legs and feet, nerve pain or tingling, and heart problems. Some people may have amyloid deposits in just one organ, while others may have deposits in multiple organs. While having both conditions can affect your prognosis, it's important to note that outcomes vary significantly from person to person. Those who have no heart symptoms or amyloid deposits in only one organ often have better outcomes. Your healthcare team can provide more specific guidance based on your individual situation.
