Yes. I have both. The MM is very low burden and was basically asymptomatic. One “bright side” to concurrent MM: if you fail a few line of treatment, you may be eligible for commercially available CAR-T as may be appropriate.

At the beginning of treatment I had smoldering myeloma and AL but after my first line of chemo it dropped down to MGUS.

Yes, it's actually quite common for these conditions to occur together. About 12-15% of people with multiple myeloma also develop AL amyloidosis. Both conditions are related to plasma cell disorders, where plasma cells that normally make antibodies begin producing abnormal proteins instead. If you have multiple myeloma, here are key symptoms to watch for that might indicate AL amyloidosis:

• Shortness of breath
• Diarrhea
• Feeling full quickly when eating
• Unexplained weight loss
• Swelling in legs, ankles, and feet
• Pain, numbness, or tingling in hands and feet
• Protein in urine
• Enlarged liver
• Heart problems
• Swollen tongue

If you experience any of these symptoms, your doctor may recommend additional testing, such as a biopsy of abdominal fat or bone marrow to check for amyloid proteins.
