I just was told by my neuro that my genetic swab was sent back bc of questions that I already answered originally regarding symptoms. I also have a genetic history. I have an appt in 2 weeks with Vanderbilt and I won't even have these results yet. Advice? I'm so upset. My neuropathy both peripheral and autonomic are worsening.🤐

How can you manage when genetic testing is delayed while your neuropathy symptoms worsen?

It's completely understandable to feel frustrated when genetic testing gets delayed, especially when your symptoms are getting worse. The waiting can feel overwhelming.

Since your appointment at Vanderbilt is coming up, here are some ways to prepare:

* Bring all your medical records, including documentation of your symptoms and family history of amyloidosis
* Write down how your peripheral and autonomic neuropathy symptoms have changed - when they started worsening and specific examples
* List any new symptoms like dizziness, digestive issues, temperature sensitivity, or changes in blood pressure
* Prepare questions about treatment options that might help while waiting for genetic results

Contact your neurologist's office to see if they can expedite the genetic test resubmission. Sometimes persistent follow-up helps move things along.

In the meantime, focus on symptom management. Even without genetic confirmation, specialists at centers like Vanderbilt often have experience diagnosing ATTR-PN through comprehensive neurological exams, biopsies, and clinical evaluation. They may be able to move forward with some testing or treatment recommendations based on your clinical presentation and family history.

The delay doesn't mean you're stuck - it just means the path forward might look slightly different than expected. Early detection and treatment are important for preventing permanent organ damage, so your upcoming specialist appointment is a positive step forward.
