For AL Amyloidosis:
Chemotherapy and immunomodulators target abnormal plasma cells that produce the proteins forming amyloid fibrils. These treatments aim to kill and slow the growth of those cells, which can stop or reduce new fibril production.

For ATTR Amyloidosis:
Several FDA-approved medications work to prevent new amyloid deposits from building up in the heart:
- Tafamidis (Vyndamax/Vyndaqel)
- Acoramidis (Attruby)
- Vutrisiran (Amvuttra)

These medications can slow disease progression by stopping new fibril formation.

Removing Existing Fibrils:
Current treatments like tafamidis can slow the disease but cannot remove proteins already deposited in the heart. However, a new experimental drug (ALXN2220) is being studied for its ability to actually clear existing amyloid deposits from the heart, which may reverse heart damage. This is still in early trials and not yet available as a standard treatment.
