My hubby takes 4 senna everyday, plus a glass of miralax and lactulose as needed. He hasn’t gone in 3 days so we tried magnesium nitrate & 2 ducolax. So far nothing has worked. Does anyone have any suggestions. He has a colonoscopy scheduled for early January.
The other half of the time he wears depends because of
diahhrea. It is a battle for him to regulate it.
Thank you for any help!
How can someone with amyloidosis manage severe constipation and diarrhea that alternates?
It sounds like your husband is dealing with challenging gastrointestinal symptoms that can occur with amyloidosis. The alternating constipation and diarrhea may be related to autonomic neuropathy, where nerve damage affects digestive Show Full Answer
Hi Mary, when I had the revolving diarrhea and constipation I was sent to a gastrointestinal doc and she is awesome. It stopped before she finished testing but she ordered several test to pinpoint something but concluded that the PN involvement in Amyloidosis (hATTR-CM and PN - cardiomyopathy and peripheral neuropathy) was likely the cause. She did prescribe Colestipol (sp?). I won't venture a definition because I forgot. I do believe the combination of meds I'm on now had something to do with it but I'm not sure. I am on Vyndamax, Amvuttra, and Diflunisal specifically for the Amyloidosis. But, I take a couple of diuretics, vitamins, and bunch of other stuff. My best advise -- see a gastrointestinal doc. God bless you and your husband -- richly. ♥️
After my treatments the next two days I sometimes get severe diarrhea. I found taking Imodium as soon as it starts stops the diarrhea. For constipation a glass of the orange medamusol (spelled wrong) unplugs within 1/2 hour. Works well every single time.
GS I’m going to try the Metamucil and see if that works. My whole problem is diarrhea. Mary I’m so upset for your hubby. These kind of symptoms rule your life. I hope something works for him.
Mary, the AI generated response above is good guidance. Magnesium Hydroxide (milk of magnesia) works quite well, something I used when I was battling this same problem. Also with loose bowels I always found Metamucil to work, ( it actually works both ways) I actually use it daily. Hopefully your husband works through these symptoms but again as mentioned above it could be autonomic neuropathy. A gastro visit might help because it could be pancreatic enzyme issues etc.
good luck to your husband.
