Do you have cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), and are you wondering if others experience this form of amyloidosis?

You're not alone. CAA is a recognized form of amyloidosis that specifically affects the brain. It's actually more common than you might think, especially in older adults.

Studies show that between 23 percent and 29 percent of people older than 50 have moderate to severe CAA. This makes it a relatively common condition in aging populations.

What makes CAA different:

* It's a localized form of amyloidosis that typically only occurs in the brain
* The protein involved is called amyloid beta, which builds up in blood vessel walls in the brain
* It doesn't usually cause amyloid deposits in other organs

Types of CAA:

There are two main forms:
* Spontaneous CAA - develops on its own, more common with aging
* Hereditary CAA - passed down in families (very rare, affecting fewer than 1,000 people in the U.S.)

Members of MyAmyloidosisTeam have shared similar concerns about brain-related amyloidosis, so you're definitely not alone in navigating this diagnosis.
