Yes, amyloidosis can absolutely affect the eyes — and with AL (light chain) amyloidosis specifically, there are some well-known eye-related symptoms to be aware of.

With AL amyloidosis, amyloid proteins can build up in the outer parts of the eye, including the eyelids and surrounding tissues. This can cause symptoms like:

- Droopy eyelids
- Double vision
- Constant eye irritation or dryness
- Purple or blue skin around the eyes, especially when rubbed
- Lumps under the skin near the eyes Light sensitivity isn't unusual when the eyes are affected by amyloidosis. Amyloid deposits can affect the cornea (the clear dome over the eye), which plays a key role in focusing light. When the cornea is disrupted, it can make eyes much more sensitive to light.

Dry eye is also linked to amyloidosis and can contribute to light sensitivity and general discomfort. It's really important to bring up your light sensitivity with your doctor or an eye specialist (ophthalmologist) as soon as possible. Early detection and treatment can make a big difference in protecting your vision.

Regular eye exams are a good idea when living with amyloidosis, so any changes can be caught and managed early.
