With amyloidosis, misfolded proteins can build up in the walls of the heart, making them thicker and stiffer than normal. This stiffness makes it harder for the heart to relax, fill with blood, and pump properly — and that can create a sensation of tightness or pressure. Some other things that can contribute to that tight feeling include:
- Fluid buildup — when circulation is reduced, fluid can back up into the lungs, adding to chest discomfort
- Irregular heart rhythms — amyloid deposits can affect the heart's electrical system, making it beat less efficiently
- Reduced oxygen delivery — when the heart struggles to pump, tissues (including the heart itself) may not get enough oxygen
