Living with AL amyloidosis and needing dialysis is something others in the community have navigated too. AL amyloidosis affects the kidneys in about 65% of cases, which can eventually lead to kidney failure β€” making dialysis a reality for some.

When kidneys are significantly impacted, dialysis helps filter waste from the blood. However, long-term dialysis can bring its own amyloidosis-related complications, since dialysis isn't great at removing a protein called beta-2 microglobulin, which can build up over time. Some symptoms to be aware of with long-term dialysis include:

- Joint and shoulder pain β€” especially during or after dialysis sessions
- Carpal tunnel syndrome β€” pain, numbness, or weakness in the hands and wrists
- Bone cysts β€” which can weaken bones and increase fracture risk
- Neck or back pain β€” from amyloid deposits in the spine
- Gastrointestinal symptoms β€” less common, but possible with extended dialysis use

It's worth discussing these symptoms openly with a healthcare provider, as treatments are available to help manage them. A kidney transplant is also an option some people with AL amyloidosis explore when kidney failure occurs.
