Hives aren't commonly listed as a typical symptom of amyloidosis, but skin changes can definitely occur. Amyloidosis can affect the skin in several ways, particularly in forms called cutaneous amyloidosis.

Skin-related symptoms that have been linked to amyloidosis include:

- Itchy, scaly rashes (lichen amyloidosis)
- Itchy flat spots, often brown or gray (macular amyloidosis)
- Firm spots on the trunk, arms, legs, or face (nodular amyloidosis)
- Patches of skin that are lighter or darker than surrounding areas Since amyloid proteins can deposit in many tissues, including skin, blood vessels, and nerves, unexpected skin reactions aren't out of the question. However, unexplained hives should always be discussed with a doctor to determine whether they're connected to amyloidosis or something else entirely.

It's always worth bringing any new or unusual symptoms to your care team's attention, especially since amyloidosis can show up in surprising ways.
